As an undergraduate economics major at Occidental College, Arthur Coons exhibited a commanding personality that would serve him well in all his pursuits. He attended one of the country's finest graduate schools in economics, and soon found himself well on the way to a promising career as a college professor back at Occidental. Then he was given a taste of college administration concurrent with his teaching duties, and his aspirations took him in a new direction. On October 3, 1946, forty-six-year-old Arthur Gardiner Coons was inaugurated as the ninth president of Occidental College in Los Angeles.
